Standing against a backdrop of rolling hills and set within its own glorious gardens, Crathes Castle is every inch the classic Scottish tower house – and a fantastic day out for all the family.

Explore this magnificent 16th-century tower house, with its intricate maze of turrets, towers, oak panels and painted ceilings.

Inside you’ll find a labyrinth of cultural history, from family portraits and fine antique furniture to painted ceilings. The walled garden is split into eight sections that encompass every green delight imaginable – a sculpted topiary, soft herbaceous colours and modern exotic blooms.

Nature spotters will love the waymarked trails along the Coy Burn – keep an eye out here for buzzards, herons and kingfishers, and of course numerous caches.

The main Mega Event Tent, situated on the purpose-designed grand lawn, will of course be where the most action takes place, but if being inside is too much for you, then don’t worry, you will have plenty to discover all around the gardens and lawns. There will be a range of smaller tents around  providing locally-sourced food and drinks as well as local musicians, dancers and performers to entertain throughout the day.

Of course, one can’t forget about another key part to the Mega Day – the specially-designed ‘lab caches’ waiting to be discovered. These will be placed in various locations around the castle grounds, to encourage you to explore the area.

We’ve even taken the young cachers and young cachers at heart into consideration, with a wide range of children’s activities and events taking place – including a  ‘soft play’ activities area on the lawns, as well as face-painting, crafting and story-telling happening throughout the day.

With all this going on, or if the hustle and bustle of the main area is too much for you, then why not relax with a picnic on the lawn, directly in front of the castle? Or take a tour around this historic National Trust for Scotland property or visit the cafe on site. Of course, if you are feeling more adventurous you could visit the Go Ape Adventure playground with its zip wires and assault course.

We hope there is something for everyone at this award winning Castle and that the Mega day will prove a memorable occasion.
